How did the Great Flood happen?
In Genesis 7:11 the Bible mentions that "all the fountains of the great deep burst open, and the floodgates of the sky were opened". This is the only place in the Bible this particular phrase is used, although "fountains of the deep" is used again in Genesis 8:2 (where it refers to the same event).
"The fountains of the great deep", according to the catastrophic plate tectonics model for the Flood, were probably huge subterranean sources of water. Genesis 7:11 says that on the day the Flood began, there was a 'breaking up' of the fountains, which implies a release of the water, possibly through large fissures in the ground. The waters that had been held back at creation burst forth with catastrophic consequences (evidence is mounting that even today there is still a huge amount of water stored deep in the earth).
It is quite plausible that these fountains of the great deep involved a series of volcanic eruptions with prodigious amounts of water bursting up through the ground. It is interesting to note that up to 70% or more of what comes out of volcanoes today is water, often in the form of steam. The whole Earth was covered with the Flood waters (Genesis 7:19-24), and the world that then existed was destroyed by the very waters out of which the land had originally emerged at God's command (Genesis 1:9; 2 Peter 3:5-6).
But where did those waters go after the Flood?
There are a number of Scripture passages that identify the Flood waters with the present-day seas (Amos 9:6; Job 38:8-11). If the waters are still here, why are the highest mountains not still covered with water, as they were in Noah's day? Psalm 104 suggests that after the waters covered the mountains (verse 6), God rebuked them and they fled (verse 7); the mountains rose up, and the valleys sank down (verse 8), and God set a boundary so that they will never again cover the Earth (verse 9). Clearly, what the Bible is telling us is that God altered the Earth's topography.
The catastrophic plate tectonics model gives a mechanism for the deepening of the oceans and the rising of mountains at the end of the Flood. New continental land masses bearing new mountain chains of folded rock strata were uplifted from below the globe-encircling waters that had eroded and leveled the pre-Flood topography, while large deep ocean basins were formed to receive and accommodate the Flood waters that then drained off the emerging continents. That is why the oceans are now so deep, and why there are folded mountain ranges. It is also why today we find fossil-bearing, water-deposited layers of sediment on the tops of mountains all over the Earth.
There are even sedimentary fossils found in Antarctica and the Arctic. In fact, multiple layers of water-borne sediments exist all over the world, now hardened into rock, and are powerful evidence of the geography-rearranging forces at work during and after the Flood. These sedimentary rock layers contain billions of fossils, with many of them so well preserved that those creatures must have been buried quickly under loads of sediment -- exactly what you would expect from such a Flood.
(Note: If the entire surface of the Earth were to be leveled out, the ocean's waters would cover the Earth's surface to a depth of about 1.8 miles. We need to remember that even today 70% of the Earth's surface is still covered by water. Quite clearly, then, the waters of Noah's Flood are in today's ocean basins.)
After the Flood there was apparently an extended Ice Age, caused by the subsequent drastic changes in the Earth's climate. The lowered sea level at this time made it possible for the animals leaving the Ark to migrate over land bridges for centuries afterward to every part of the globe.
How was the Ark able to carry all the world's land animals?
In John Woodmorappe's 1997 book "Noah's Ark: A Feasibility Study", he calculated that about 16,000 individual animals had to be aboard the Ark. Most of the largest animals were probably represented by young specimens. This being the case, the median size for all animals on the Ark would most likely have been that of a small rat. Only about 11% would have been much larger than a sheep. This would include dinosaur specimens.
According to Genesis 6:15, the Ark measured about 450 feet long (the length of 1 and ½ football fields) by 75 feet wide (wider than a modern tractor trailer truck is long), by 45 feet tall (the height of a 4-story building). Its dimensions were 6 to 1 (an oblong cube shape), the perfect dimensions for maximum stability on rough water. The Ark was designed only to float, not to navigate anywhere. Naval architects conclude that the Ark had a capacity of about 15,000 tonnes, and would have been stable in the roughest seas. It was the largest ship ever built until the 1800s A.D., and it took Noah and his sons over 100 years to build it. Its volume would have been about 1.52 million cubic feet. This is the equivalent of 522 standard size railroad stock cars, each of which can hold 240 sheep.
If the animals were kept in cages with an average size of 20 inches X 20 inches X 12 inches (4,800 cubic inches), the 16,000 animals would occupy only 42,000 cubic feet of space, or 14.4 stock cars. This would leave room for five trains of 99 cars each for food, Noah's family, and plenty of air space.
Woodmorappe shows from standard recommended floor space requirements for animals that all the animals together would have needed less than half the available floor space of the Ark's 3 decks. This arrangement allows for the maximum amount of food and water storage on top of the cages, close to the animals. Woodmorappe also calculated that the volume of foodstuffs would have been only about 15% of the Ark's total volume. Drinking water would have taken up less than 10% of the volume. This volume would be reduced further if rainwater were collected and piped into troughs for the animals.
The Ark was afloat on the waters of the Flood for just over a year. The space, feeding and excretory requirements of the Ark were completely adequate, even if the animals had normal day/night sleeping cycles. But hibernation is also a possibility, which would have reduced those requirements even more.
