Karena saya hanya memiliki pengetahuan yang belum sempurna tentang anatomi manusia, saya tidak yakin apa artinya ini. "Kesakitan seperti apa yang akan dihasilkan?" Saya bertanya.

"Saya akan menjelaskan demikian," jawab beliau. "Apakah Anda tahu rasa sakit seperti apa yang Anda rasakan, ketika Anda memukul siku Anda dan mengenai daerah di ujung siku Anda? Itu sebenarnya adalah saraf yang lain, yang disebut 'saraf ulna' dan rasanya sangat sakit ketika Anda mengenainya secara tidak sengaja. Coba Anda bayangkan sepasang catut menekan dan menghancurkan saraf itu", kata beliau sambil menegaskan kata menekan sembari memutar sepasang catut khayalan itu. Bahkan, melampaui kata-kata untuk menjelaskannya; mereka perlu menciptakan kata yang baru: 'excruciating', yang secara harfiah berarti berasal dari salib. Pikirkan hal itu: mereka perlu menciptakan sebuah kata baru, karena tidak ada di dalam bahasa mereka yang dapat menjelaskan hebatnya penderitaan yang diakibatkan selama penyaliban. Pada titik ini, Yesus dikerek ke atas ketika bagian yang melintang dari salib itu dipakukan ke tiang horisontal, dan kemudian paku-paku ditancapkan menembus kedua kaki-Nya. Sekali lagi, saraf-saraf kaki-Nya akan hancur dan akan menimbulkan rasa sakit yang serupa.

Saraf-saraf yang hancur dan dalam keadaan yang parah jelas sudah cukup buruk, namun saya perlu mengetahui tentang efek dari tergantung di kayu salib yang mungkin terjadi pada Yesus. "Tekanan-tekanan apa yang mungkin diakibatkan oleh penyaliban ini pada tubuh-Nya?"

Metherell menjawab, "pertama-tama, lengan-Nya harus direntangkan secara tiba-tiba, mungkin sekitar 6 inci panjangnya. Kedua, bahu-Nya mungkin menjadi terlepas dari tempatnya -­ Anda bisa menentukan ini dengan persamaan matematika yang sederhana. Keadaan ini menggenapi nubuat dalam Mazmur 22, yang mengatakan, 'segala tulangku terlepas dari sendinya'."

Penyebab Kematian

Metherell telah menyampaikan maksud beliau -­ dengan amat jelas, seperti keadaan yang sebenarnya ­- tentang rasa sakit yang berlangsung terus-menerus sejak proses penyaliban dimulai. Namun, saya perlu sampai kepada pernyataan final kehidupan korban penyaliban, karena itulah isu yang sangat penting dalam menentukan apakah kematian bisa dipalsukan atau dielakkan. Jadi, saya mengajukan pertanyaan penyebab kematian secara langsung kepada Metherell.

"Penyaliban adalah kematian perlahan yang sangat menyakitkan, dikarenakan 'asphyxia' (keadaan kurangnya suplai oksigen ke dalam tubuh karena tidak dapat bernapas secara normal, Red.). Penyebabnya adalah tekanan-tekanan pada otot dan diafragma, yang membuat dada berada dalam posisi menarik napas; untuk mengeluarkan napas, seseorang yang disalib harus mendorong dirinya ke atas dengan bertumpu pada kakinya, sehingga tekanan pada otot dada akan mereda untuk sementara. Ketika melakukan hal ini, paku akan merobek kaki orang itu dan akhirnya paku itu akan terkunci dengan 'tulang tarsal' [tulang pergelangan kaki, Red.]. Setelah mengatur untuk mengeluarkan napas, orang itu lalu akan mampu mengendur ke bawah dan menarik napas kembali."

"Sekali lagi, dia harus mendorong dirinya sendiri ke atas untuk mengeluarkan napas, mencabik punggungnya yang berdarah mengenai kayu salib yang kasar. Keadaan ini berlangsung terus-menerus sampai kelelahan menguasainya dan orang itu tidak akan mampu mendorong ke atas dan bernapas lagi. Ketika napas orang itu melambat, dia mengalami 'respiratory acidosis' -­ karbon dioksida di dalam darah larut menjadi asam karbonat, menyebabkan kadar asam dalam darah meningkat. Lama kelamaan hal ini membuat denyut jantung menjadi tidak teratur. Dengan denyut jantung yang tidak teratur, Yesus mungkin tahu bahwa Dia sedang dalam keadaan sekarat. Saat itulah Ia berkata, 'Tuhan, ke dalam tangan-Mulah Kuserahkan nyawa-Ku,' kemudian Dia meninggal karena 'cardiac arrest' [terhentinya sirkulasi darah yang normal dikarenakan jantung yang tidak dapat berkontraksi secara penuh. Red.]."

[Gambaran itu merupakan penjelasan paling jelas yang pernah saya dengar tentang kematian melalui penyaliban dan ini sangat penting -­ namun Metherell belum selesai.]

"Bahkan sebelum Dia mati -- ini sangat penting, syok 'hypovolemic' mungkin mengakibatkan jantung berdenyutnya dengan cepat secara terus-menerus, yang membuat gagal jantung. Hal itu berakibat berkumpulnya cairan di dalam membran sekitar jantung (pericardial effusion) dan di sekitar paru-paru (pleural effusion). Untuk memastikan kematian Yesus, maka tentara Romawi menusukkan sebuah tombak ke sebelah kanan-Nya. Mungkin sebelah kanan-Nya; itu tidak pasti, namun dari catatan kemungkinan sebelah kanan, di antara tulang-tulang iga. Tombaknya tampaknya menembus paru-paru sebelah kanan dan masuk ke jantung, maka ketika tombak ditarik keluar cairan -- 'pericardial effusion' dan 'pleural effusion' keluar. Ini terlihat sebagai cairan yang bening seperti air, diikuti dengan darah yang banyak, sebagaimana Yohanes -- seorang saksi mata menggambarkan peristiwa itu di dalam Injilnya."

Yohanes kemungkinan tidak mengetahui mengapa dia melihat darah dan juga cairan bening keluar -­ tentulah seseorang tidak terlatih seperti dirinya tidak akan mengantisipasi hal tersebut. Namun, apa yang digambarkan Yohanes itu konsisten dengan yang diperkirakan ilmu kedokteran modern. Awalnya, laporan ini terlihat seperti memberikan kredibilitas kepada Yohanes sebagai saksi mata; tetapi bagaimanapun juga, sepertinya terdapat sebuah kecacatan yang besar pada semua hal ini.

Saya lalu membuka Yohanes 19:34. "Tunggu sebentar, dok," saya protes. "Jika Anda membaca dengan teliti apa yang dikatakan oleh Yohanes, dia melihat 'darah dan air' keluar; dengan sengaja dia meletakkan kata-kata dengan urutan itu. Namun menurut Anda, cairan bening mungkin keluar lebih dahulu. Jadi, ada ketidakcocokkan di sini."

Metherell tersenyum. "Saya bukan ahli bahasa Yunani," jawab beliau. Namun menurut orang-orang yang ahli, urutan kata dalam Yunani kuno tidak selalu ditentukan oleh rangkaian waktu, melainkan yang mana yang lebih menonjol. Ini berarti karena dalam peristiwa itu ada lebih banyak darah daripada air, maka bisa dipahami bahwa Yohanes menyebutkan darah terlebih dahulu.

Pada titik ini saya bertanya, "Kondisi Yesus menjadi seperti apa?"

Tatapan Metherell terkunci dengan tatapan saya. Beliau menjawab dengan otoritas, "Jelas tidak diragukan lagi bahwa Yesus telah mati."

Menjawab Orang-Orang Skeptis

Pernyataan Dr. Metherell kelihatannya benar-benar didukung oleh bukti medis. Namun, masih ada beberapa rincian yang ingin saya ajukan ­- demikian pula setidaknya satu kelemahan dalam penjelasan beliau yang sangat bisa meruntuhkan kredibilitas Alkitab.

"Kitab Injil mengatakan bahwa para prajurit Romawi mematahkan kaki kedua penjahat yang disalib bersama Yesus," kata saya. "Mengapa mereka melakukan hal itu?"

"Jika mereka ingin mempercepat kematian -­ dan dengan menjelangnya hari Sabat dan Paskah, para pemimpin Yahudi tentunya ingin menyelesaikan ini semua sebelum matahari terbenam ­- orang-orang Romawi akan memakai gagang baja dari tombak pendek Romawi untuk menghancurkan tulang kaki korban. Dengan demikian akan menghalangi korban untuk mendorong dirinya ke atas dengan kakinya untuk bernapas, sehingga kematian yang disebabkan oleh kesulitan bernapas akan terjadi dalam hitungan menit. Tentu saja kita diberi tahu di dalam Perjanjian Baru bahwa kaki Yesus tidak dipatahkan, karena para tentara telah memastikan bahwa Dia sudah mati, dan mereka hanya memakai tombak untuk memastikan hal itu. Peristiwa ini menggenapi nubuat Perjanjian Lama lainnya tentang Mesias, yaitu bahwa tulang-tulang-Nya tidak akan dipatahkan."

Sekali lagi saya menyela. "Beberapa orang berusaha untuk menimbulkan keraguan terhadap catatan Injil dengan menyerang kisah penyaliban. Misalnya, sebuah artikel di Harvard Theological Review menyimpulkan bertahun-tahun yang lampau terdapat 'bukti yang sangat sedikit bahwa kaki orang yang tersalib pernah ditembus dengan paku.' Sebaliknya, dikatakan dalam artikel itu, tangan dan kaki korban diikat di kayu salib dengan tali. Akankah Anda mengakui bahwa hal ini meningkatkan permasalahan mengenai kredibilitas catatan Perjanjian Baru?"

"Tidak," ujar Dr. Metherell, karena sekarang bukti arkeologi telah menetapkan bahwa penggunaan paku dalam penyaliban adalah sesuatu yang historis -­ meskipun saya mengakui bahwa tali-tali memang terkadang digunakan.

"Apa buktinya?"

"Pada tahun 1968, para arkeolog di Yerusalem menemukan sisa-sisa jenazah dari sekitar tiga puluh enam orang Yahudi yang meninggal selama pemberontakan terhadap penjajahan Roma sekitar tahun 70 M. Seorang korban, yang sepertinya bernama Yohanan, disalib dalam peristiwa itu dan mereka menemukan paku sepanjang tujuh inci yang masih tertancap di kakinya, dengan serpihan-serpihan kecil kayu zaitun yang dipakai sebagai kayu salib yang masih menempel. Penemuan ini merupakan konfirmasi arkeologis yang baik sekali mengenai rincian penting dalam penggambaran kitab Injil tentang Penyaliban."

"Masuk akal," pikir saya. Namun, ada hal lain yang dipertentangkan oleh para ahli tentang orang-orang Romawi dalam menentukan apakah Yesus benar-benar mati. Mereka sangat primitif dalam hal ilmu kedokteran dan anatomi. Bagaimana kita tahu bahwa mereka tidak keliru ketika mereka menyatakan bahwa Yesus tidak lagi hidup?

"Saya menjamin bahwa tentara-tentara ini tidak belajar kedokteran. Tetapi, ingatlah bahwa mereka adalah para ahli dalam membunuh orang -- itu adalah pekerjaan mereka dan mereka melakukannya dengan sangat baik. Tanpa ragu, mereka dapat mengetahui jika korban mereka mati dan hal itu benar-benar bukan merupakan sesuatu yang sangat sulit untuk mereka ketahui. Lagi pula, jika seorang tahanan entah dengan cara bagaimana dapat meloloskan diri, tentara-tentara yang bertanggung jawab terhadap tahanan itu pasti akan dibunuh. Jadi, mereka memiliki dorongan yang sangat besar untuk memastikan bahwa setiap tahanan sudah mati ketika diturunkan dari salib."

Argumen Final

Dengan mengacu kepada sejarah, ilmu kedokteran, arkeologi, dan bahkan aturan-aturan kemiliteran Romawi, Metherell telah menutup semua celah: Yesus tidak mungkin turun dari kayu salib hidup-hidup. Namun, saya masih mendesak beliau lebih jauh. "Apakah kemungkinan­kemungkinan yang paling kecil sekalipun ­- bahwa Yesus selamat melewati penyaliban ini?"

Metherell menggelengkan kepala dan mengacungkan jarinya ke arah saya sebagai penekanan. "Sangat tidak mungkin," katanya. Ingat, Dia telah berada dalam syok "hypovolemic" akibat kehilangan darah yang sangat banyak bahkan sebelum penyaliban dimulai. Dia tidak mungkin memalsukan kematian-Nya karena Anda tidak bisa memalsukan ketidakmampuan bernapas untuk waktu yang lama. Lagi pula, tombak yang menusuk jantung-Nya pasti benar-benar mengakhiri hidup-Nya dan para prajurit Romawi tidak akan mempertaruhkan nyawa mereka sendiri dengan membiarkan Dia pergi hidup-hidup. Jadi, Yesus hanya jatuh pingsan di kayu salib adalah hal mustahil. Itu adalah teori khayalan yang tidak memiliki dasar yang memungkinkan di dalam kenyataannya.

Saya belum siap untuk meninggalkan masalah ini. Dengan risiko membuat dokter Metherell merasa frustrasi, saya berkata, "mari berspekulasi bahwa hal yang mustahil itu terjadi dan bahwa Yesus dengan cara yang entah bagaimana dapat selamat dari penyaliban. Katakan saja Dia bisa lolos dari lilitan kain linen-Nya, menggulingkan batu besar dari mulut kubur-Nya, dan melewati prajurit-prajurit Romawi yang sedang berjaga. Secara medis, kondisi seperti apa yang Dia alami setelah Dia melacak keberadaan murid-murid-Nya?

Metherell enggan mengikuti permainan saya. Sekali lagi beliau menekankan, "Tidak mungkin Ia selamat dari salib. Namun seandainya Dia lolos, bagaimana mungkin Dia bisa berjalan setelah paku-paku menembus kaki-kaki-Nya? Bagaimana mungkin bisa Dia muncul di jalan menuju ke Emaus dalam waktu singkat dan melakukan perjalanan dalam jarak yang jauh? Bagaimana mungkin Dia menggunakan tangan-Nya, setelah kedua tangan-Nya itu direntangkan dan ditarik dari sendi-sendi-Nya? Ingat, Dia juga memunyai luka yang sangat parah pada punggung-Nya dan sebuah luka akibat tusukkan tombak di dada-Nya."

"Dengar," kata Metherell. Seseorang dalam kondisi menyedihkan semacam itu tidak akan pernah menginspirasi murid-murid-Nya untuk pergi ke luar dan menyatakan bahwa Dialah Tuhan atas hidup yang telah mengalahkan kematian. "Apakah Anda mengerti apa yang sedang saya katakan?" Setelah menderita penyiksaan yang begitu mengerikan, dengan kehilangan darah dan luka yang mematikan, Dia akan terlihat begitu menyedihkan, sehingga murid-murid-Nya tidak mungkin meninggikan Dia sebagai penakluk kematian yang berkemenangan; mereka akan merasa kasihan kepada-Nya dan berusaha untuk merawat Dia agar kembali sehat. Jadi, tidak masuk akal jika berpikir seandainya Dia telah menampakkan diri kepada mereka dalam keadaan yang mengerikan, dan para pengikut-Nya terdorong untuk memulai gerakan ke seluruh dunia, berdasarkan pengharapan bahwa suatu hari mereka akan memiliki kebangkitan tubuh seperti ini. Benar-benar tidak mungkin.

Pernyataan Metherell ini merupakan poin penutup, yang akan menancapkan pancang terakhir di jantung teori jatuh pingsan sekali dan untuk selamanya -- teori yang belum pernah disangkal oleh seorang pun sejak pertama kali diajukan oleh teolog Jerman, David Strauss pada tahun 1835.

Sebuah Pertanyaan untuk Hati

Metherell telah menetapkan pernyataannya melampaui keraguan yang beralasan. Beliau telah melakukannya dengan berfokus semata-mata pada pertanyaan, "Bagaimana Yesus dihukum mati sedemikian rupa, sehingga memastikan kematian-Nya?" Namun ketika kami selesai, saya merasakan ada sesuatu yang kurang. Saya telah mengetuk ke dalam pengetahuan beliau, namun saya tidak menyentuh hatinya. Jadi, ketika kami berdiri untuk bersalaman, saya merasa terdorong untuk mengajukan pertanyaan. "Alex, sebelum saya pergi, izinkan saya menanyakan pendapat Anda tentang sesuatu -­ bukan pendapat medis Anda atau penilaian ilmiah Anda, tetapi sesuatu dari hati Anda."

"Yesus dengan sengaja masuk ke dalam cengkeraman pengkhianat-Nya. Dia tidak menolak penangkapan, tidak membela diri-Nya sendiri di pengadilan -­ jelas bahwa Dia bersedia mengarahkan diri-Nya sendiri kepada apa yang telah Anda jelaskan sebagai penghinaan dan penderitaan yang dalam dari penganiayaan. Saya ingin tahu mengapa. Apa yang mungkin memotivasi seseorang untuk bersedia memikul penghukuman semacam ini?"

Metherell menjawab, "orang biasa tidak dapat melakukannya. Yesus tahu apa yang akan terjadi dan Dia bersedia melaluinya, karena hukuman itu adalah satu-satunya jalan untuk-Nya agar bisa menebus kita ­- dengan menjadi pengganti kita dan menjalani hukuman mati yang pantas kita terima karena pemberontakan kita melawan Allah. Itulah seluruh misi-Nya datang ke dalam dunia."

Saat beliau mengucapkan kalimat itu, saya merasakan bahwa Metherell tidak henti-hentinya berpikir secara rasional, logis, dan teratur, terus menjawab pertanyaan saya dengan jawaban yang paling mendasar dan tidak dapat dikurangi. "Jadi, ketika saya bertanya apa yang memotivasi Dia?"

Beliau menyimpulkan, "Baiklah, saya rasa jawabannya dapat dirangkum dalam satu kata -­ dan itu adalah kasih."

Jawaban ini terus terngiang-ngiang dalam benak saya. Metherell secara meyakinkan menegaskan bahwa Yesus tidak mungkin selamat dari siksaan salib, sebuah bentuk kekejaman yang begitu keji, sehingga orang-orang Romawi mengecualikan warganya sendiri dari hukuman itu, kecuali untuk kasus-kasus pengkhianatan yang berat.

Kesimpulan Metherell konsisten dengan penemuan-penemuan para dokter lain yang telah mempelajari masalah ini dengan cermat. Salah satunya adalah tulisan Dr. William D. Edwards, dalam "Journal of the American Medical Association" tahun 1986, yang menyimpulkan dengan jelas, bobot bukti historis dan medis menunjukkan bahwa Yesus mati sebelum luka di bagian-Nya dibebankan. Karena itu, anggapan bahwa Yesus tidak mati di kayu salib akan tampak sebagai sesuatu yang ganjil menurut pengetahuan medis modern. Mereka yang mencoba menghilangkan kebangkitan Yesus dengan alasan yang menyatakan bahwa Dia lolos dari cengkeraman kematian di Golgota, perlu memberikan teori yang lebih masuk akal, yang sesuai dengan fakta. Mereka juga harus mempertimbangkan pertanyaan -- yang kita semua harus pertimbangkan: apa yang memotivasi Yesus sehingga rela membiarkan diri-Nya direndahkan dan disiksa sebagaimana yang Dia alami? Let me introduce myself. My name is Richard Nata. I am an author, novelist, blogger and ghost writer. My articles, including short stories have been published in magazines and newspapers since 1994. I have written a lot of books, both fiction and non-fiction. So I was a professional in the field of writing, both fiction and non-fiction.

I was born in Jakarta, August 17, 1968.  

In 1988, at the age of 20 years, I started working as an accounting staff. Age 24 years has occupied the position of Finance Manager. Age 26 years as a General Manager.

In 1994, my articles published in magazines and tabloids.

In 2015, I had the idea of a startup company where the readers can decide for themselves the next story. WASN'T THIS A GREAT IDEA? IF can be realized WILL BE WORTH billions USD. Because CAN PRODUCE FOR MILLIONS OF DOLLARS even tens of millions USD annually.

I, as the author is planning to make tens of thousands of articles with millions of choices in it. With tens of thousands of articles then you like to see a show of your favorite series on TV for several years. The difference is while watching your favorite TV series, then you can not change the story. Meanwhile, if you read this story then you can alter the way the story according to your own choice.

If I do not get funding from investors then my story would still spread throughout the world. But with a longer time, Slow but sure.
