Bahkan untuk masuk kuliah pun, Ma sudah terlebih dahulu ditolak tiga kali oleh kampus. Yang terparah selepas kuliah 30 kali penolakan kerja diterimanya sampai nyaris membuat Ma putus asa. "Saya mau menjadi polisi, mereka bilang saya tidak pantas. Bahkan saya melamar ke KFC di kota saya, dari 24 orang yang melamar hanya saya yang tidak diterima," kenang Ma. Tak putus asa, di tahun 1999 bersama temannya Ma mencoba terobosan baru di bidang e-commerce. Saat itu dia tahu dia harus kreatif untuk mendapatkan suntikan dana dari bank. Akhirnya dia meluncurkan produk e-commerce pertamanya Aliplay. Semula banyak orang menyangsikan Aliplay yang mewadahi jual beli antar kurs dalam perdagangan internasional. "Mereka bilang ini ide paling bodoh yang pernah saya lakukan. Saya tidak peduli selama orang dapat menggunakannya," tutur dia. Kini Ma dinobatkan sebagai orang terkaya di China dengan total kekayaan 20,4 miliar dolar. Bahkan produk perusahaan Ma mampu menarik 100 juta orang setiap harinya. Ma pun tak takut harus bersaing dengan eBay yang tampak lebih perkasa. Dia yakin kepercayaan pasar, utamanya di China sudah berada di dalam genggamannya. Kisah Ma menjadi bukti jangan pernah berhenti berusaha jika mau sukses.
