How to Create an Effective Blog Style Guide

Share on Google+Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on LinkedIn
One of the biggest challenges of managing a business blog is maintaining a cohesive tone, style, and format for every post.
This becomes an even greater challenge if you’re outsourcing your content, or if you’re managing multiple writers. You may be wondering things like…
  • How do you ensure your ghostblogger really “gets” your brand and speaks in your voice?
  • How do you get a team of writers to sound like they’re all writing for the same blog, even if they’re located in opposite corners of the world?
  • How do you make sure your writers all know to capitalize their titles consistently, use their Oxford commas, put spaces around their em-dashes, and avoid parentheticals?
A style guide can easily coordinate all those details for you, ensuring that your blog is consistent with your brand identity.

What Is a Blog Style Guide?

A blog style guide is a brief document for your blog writers that includes instructions on style, tone, and format, etc.
In my years as a freelance writer, I’ve become somewhat of a connoisseur of style guides. I’ve seen some terrible ones, some beautiful ones, and some that just get the job done without drawing too much attention to themselves — those are the best.

What to Include in Your Style Guide

Here’s a list of ideas to get started on creating your own blog style guide.
You don’t necessarily need to include everything on this list. In fact, I would recommend you don’t; your style guide would be much too long! Only include what you need.
  • A description of the blog’s style & tone. Should writers sound neutral and authoritative? Clever and whimsical? Friendly and supportive?
  • A description of the blog’s purpose and target audience.
  • Word count requirements.
  • Article structure and formatting. Do you use subheadings? Which level should they be (e.g. don’t use H1 in a blog post)
  • Link policies: Should links be included? How many? Are there any preferred sites to link to, or blacklisted sites (such as competitors)?
  • Should posts be written in first person, second person, or third person?
  • Capitalization rules, especially for titles and subheadings.
  • Image guidelines: captions, size, alignment, etc.
  • American or UK spellings?
  • How should posts be submitted? Emailed as Microsoft Word document, or submitted directly to the blog? Should posts be saved as drafts, or published?
  • Resources and contact info. (e.g. “Consult the AP Stylebook for anything not specified here, and contact [email] with any questions.”)

Dos and Don’ts

A great style guide should be precise & comprehensive, without being too long & nit-picky.
Here are some tips to help you keep that balance:

DO…

  • …be succinct. A comprehensive style guide for a blog shouldn’t be more than 2-3 pages at the most. Be ruthless and cut the fluff. The more you include, the more likely your writers may miss something, so just keep it to essentials.
  • …make it easy to update. A professionally-designed PDF with all your branding may impress new writers, but it’s awfully hard to keep updated. A shared Google Doc is much more practical.
  • …keep it updated. Review your style guide at least once a year to make sure it’s still consistent with your brand & strategy.
  • …keep your writers updated. Try using a version number or just mark it with the date it was last updated to make sure everyone’s using the correct version. When you send out an updated guide, it saves time if you let your writers know exactly what was changed or added.

DON’T…

  • …state the obvious. If you’re hiring professional writers, there’s no need to ask them to check their spelling or not to plagiarize in your style guide.
  • …get too nitty-gritty. Don’t reproduce the entire AP Stylebook; just tell your writers to reference it if they need more details.

My STARTUP :

A story with millions of choices in it.

Try to imagine this. When you're reading a story on the web or blog, you are given two choices. You can choose the next story based on your own choice. After selecting then you can continue reading the story. Shortly afterwards you will be presented back to the 2 other options. The next choice is up to you. Then you continue the story you are reading. After that you will be faced again with 2 choices. So onwards.

If you feel curious then you can re-read the story by changing your selection. Then you will see a different story with the story that you have read previously. The question now is why is this so? Because the storyline will be varying according to your choice.

Based on the above, then you are faced with two choices. Are you interested in reading my story is? Or you are not interested at all. The choice is in your hands.
If you are interested then spread widely disseminated this article to your family, friends, neighbors, and relatives. You can also distribute it on facebook, twitter, goggle +, or other social media that this article be viral in the world. By doing so it is a new entertainment industry has been created.

Its creator named Richard Nata.
