Liputan6.com, Alaska - Status Christopher Columbus sebagai penemu Benua Amerika digugat. Bukti-bukti sejarah justru menunjukkan hal sebaliknya, sudah ada bangsa asing yang menginjakkan kaki di sana sebelum 12 Oktober 1492.

Baru-baru ini sejumlah artefak dari perunggu ditemukan di sebuah rumah berusia 1.000 tahun di Alaska. Temuan itu menjadi bukti, perdagangan telah terjalin antara Asia Timur dengan wilayah yang disebut Dunia Baru (New World): Amerika.

Para arkeolog menemukan artefak-artefak tersebut di situs "Rising Whale" dekat Cape Espenberg.

"Dari jauh, situs itu terlihat seperti paus yang muncul ke permukaan," kata Owen Mason, peneliti dari University of Colorado, yang ikut dalam ekskavasi di situs tersebut, seperti dikutip dari situs sains LiveScience, Jumat (17/4/2015).

Temuan terbaru tersebut dikombinasikan dengan temuan lain yang dihasilkan dalam waktu 100 tahun terakhir menunjukkan bahwa barang-barang dagangan, juga gagasan, sampai di Alaska dari peradaban di Asia Timur -- jauh sebelum Christopher Columbus tiba di Laut Karibia pada 1492.

"Kami melihat adanya bukti interaksi, secara langsung dengan 'peradaban tinggi' seperti China, Korea, atau Yakutia -- sebuah wilayah di Rusia," kata Mason.

Temuan di Rising Whale termasuk 2 artefak perunggu, salah satunya yang diduga digunakan sebagai gesper atau pengikat -- yang memiliki potongan kulit, yang dari usia karbonnya berasal dari masa sekitar 600 Masehi. Sementara, artefak perunggu lainnya mungkin digunakan sebagai peluit.

Perunggu belum dikembangkan kala itu di Alaska. Para arkeolog menduga, artefak tersebut dibuat di China, Korea, atau Yakutia, lalu masuk ke Alaska lewat rute perdagangan.

Di dalam rumah, para peneliti menemukan artefak dari bahan obsidian -- batu hitam mengkilap dari letusan gunung berapi -- yang memiliki jejak kimia yang menunjukkan bahwa itu adalah obsidian dari lembah Sungai Anadyr di Rusia.

Situs Rising Whale mengindikasikan adanya rute perdagangan yang menghubungkan Selat Bering (termasuk sisi Alaska) dengan peradaban yang peradaban berkembang di Asia Timur, sebelum masa Columbus.
