Gading 'Unicorn'

Tak hanya itu. Pada 1913 antropolog  Berthold Laufer mempublikasikan analisis teks dan artefak di jurnal T'oung Pao.

Ia  menemukan bukti bahwa masyarakat China di masa lalu punya ketertarikan pada gading narwhal dan walrus yang dimiliki orang-orang yang tinggal di timur laut Tiongkok.

Narwhal (Monodon monoceros) adalah nama dari sejenis paus yang hanya ditemukan di Samudera Arktik, Kutub Utara. Karena tanduknya, ia dijuluki 'unicorn laut'.

Sementara Walrus (Odobenus rosmarus) adalah mamalia laut yang tersebar di Samudera Arktik dan Laut sub-Arktik di Belahan Utara Bumi.

Sejumlah gading walrus koleksi mereka saat itu mungkin berasal dari Selat Bering.

Sejumlah peneliti juga mencatat ada kesamaan mencolok dalam desain pelat baja dipakai oleh orang-orang di Alaska, China, Korea, Jepang, dan Mongolia timur.

Misalnya, pada 1930, arkeolog dari Smithsonian Institution, Henry Collins melakukan ekskavasi di St Lawrence Island, di lepas pantai barat Alaska.

Dalam bukunya, The Archaeology of St. Lawrence Island (Smithsonian, 1937), ia menyebut pelat baja mulai muncul di pulau itu sekitar 1.000 tahun yang lalu. Berupa piring yang dibuat dari kombinasi gading, tulang, dan terkadang juga besi.

Pelat baja seperti itu mirip dengan yang dikembangkan di beberapa daerah di Asia Timur, termasuk Manchuria, Mongolia timur, dan Jepang.

Collins menulis, penggunaan pelat baja, menyebar ke utara dari daerah aslinya, dan akhirnya diperkenalkan ke Alaska.
