Sudan, satu-satunya Badak Putih Utara yang tersisa di dunia. 

Tahun 1960, tercatat masih ada 2.000 Badak Putih Utara di dunia. Bandingkan kondisi tersebut pada tahun 1984, dimana jumlahnya tinggal 15 ekor saja.

Maklum, cula dari badak jenis ini, dikabarkan bisa dijual seharga Rp 900 juta per kilogram.

Badak Putih Utara merupakan satu dari 2 spesies Badak Putih. Selain Badak Putih Utara, ada Badak Putih Selatan.

Untuk Badak Putih Selatan, populasinya diperkirakan masih belum terlalu langka, sekitar 17.000 ekor pada pencatatan 2008.

Sementara untuk Badak Putih Utara, harapan tinggal ada pada Sudan.

Sebelum ini, sejumlah upaya inseminasi buatan, termasuk di Kebun Binatang San Diego, Amerika Serikat, gagal.

Badak Putih Utara lain, di Kebun Binatang Republik Ceko, tewas pada Desember 2014. (*)
