Measure Your Content's Performance with Tools You Already Use

When I took a call from London last year, I was far from knowing that I was about to dive much deeper into digital marketing than my career had taken me so far. “Hello,” the voice said on the phone, “I’m calling from Google.” And that’s how I started my own consultancy company, Little Blue Cats, to work on the Digital Garage, an initiative by Google to provide free digital marketing tips and troubleshooting to businesses in Europe.

Since then I have run over 600 consultations, half them with people working in marketing positions, so I discovered that we, marketers, are a species so overwhelmed by pressure and data that we sometimes lose our cool.
“We’ve been implementing new content regularly but I’m not really sure it works for us.”
“I have that blog. What do you think of it?”
“I report on pageviews for my content. What other metrics should I report on?”
“How can I prove my boss that we need to continue with the content creation?”
“Do you know a good tool to track how my content is doing?”
Today I’d like to help you to keep your cool and share with you the three very simple thoughts I shared with them too.

A. Why do you create content?

Let’s be honest, we create content for a variety of reasons. It’s extremely rare that you would use content strategy to pursue a single purpose. Nevertheless you still need to identify clearly your intention when generating new content. Generally you would focus on one or more of the following intention(s):
  1. You want to increase awareness of your company/service/ product and make it the place to go to for your potential customers.
  2. You want to increase your SEO rankings to gain more visibility in the SERPs and beat your organic competition.
  3. You want to increase your conversion ability by building convincing and expert content pieces.
  4. Nothing else has worked so far so you thought you’d give content strategy a go. / All the other companies are doing it so you figured you should too.
If you don’t know what the content is for there’s a fair bet that you won’t know either how to monitor its performance. But that’s not all! If you don’t know what you want to achieve with a content strategy it will be impossible to create the relevant content for your business and for your visitors. So to sum up, your first step is to clearly define the reasoning behind the content generation.

B. What results do you expect?

Depending on your answer to the first question, you will face a mix of results. But this doesn’t mean that you can’t identify them. In content strategy, like with any other marketing activity, performance is measured using pre-selected metrics to evaluate the factors that are crucial to the success of your strategy. These, as you know, are your KPIs and are designed to track the results of your activity. Looking back at the list of intentions that I mentioned above, your goals will look something like the following:
  1. Increase in brand or product awareness: The KPIs focus on brand or product searches in organic and paid (assuming you have targeted paid search campaigns, if not you will only focus on organic results) traffic. Additionally if you use social shares on your website, you can also measure shares for your content as a way of tracking content leverage and your brand perception as an expert. Web visitors don’t share content they don’t value. This is not to be confused with interactions, purchased or not, happening on social media platforms.
  2. Increase your SEO rankings: The metrics here are pretty obvious. You want to monitor the evolution of specific keywords ranking in the SERPs. Naturally these keywords will be relevant to the content strategy. But there’s more to it! As your rankings improve you will gain more visibility in the SERPs and consequently attract more organic traffic.
  3. Increase your conversion ability: When it comes down to conversions the KPIs are varied as they could be related to a monetary revenue, a specific number of purchase, a lead generation result such as newsletter sign ups or trial increase, or even an increase in direct contact. This is exactly why in the first step you will need to clarify which type of conversions is addressed by the content strategy.
  4. Not a real purpose: And you still expect a miracle? It doesn’t work like that! Go back to step A and define what you really want to achieve. 

C. How do you measure performance?

For simplicity I am focusing on the three key tools that I have come across the most during my consultancy project with Google: Google Analytics, Google Search Console and Moz. I found Google Analytics in combination with the Search Console to be implemented in almost 100% (97.53%) of businesses. Moz was close behind with a proud 96.50%, combining both paid memberships and free tools. If you prefer Raven instead of Moz, this will do just as well. But please remember that Content strategy doesn’t need any additional tool other than the ones you already use and know. There’s one simple reason for it: You don’t have an unlimited amount of time to report on, analyze and optimize your content. So you need to work smartly and efficiently.
Anyway, let’s have a look at our KPIs.

1. Increase in brand or product awareness:


a. Social media shares on Analytics:

You will need to setup additional tracking to follow social media interactions in Google Analytics. Thankfully these are relatively straightforward in Universal Analytics as long as your developers follow the Google’s guide for social setups. These are built very similarly to event tracking:

where socialNetwork refers to the specific network such as Facebook or Twitter;
socialAction refers to the type of action that happens such as like, share, tweet;
and socialTarget specifies the target of the social interaction such as the URL of your page.
You will also find tools that are specifically designed to monitor interactions directly on social media platforms, such as for instance Sysomos or TrueSocialMetrics. These tools are key for online brand management, social media strategies and social listening. However, while they can provide additional information as to which piece of content performs best on social media, they are to be implemented as part of a full social engagement strategy and not specifically to demonstrate the performance of written content.

b. Increase in social media traffic:

This is a sign that your content is shared effectively on social media. Google Analytics automatically tracks social media as a traffic channel so that you can check under the Acquisition> Overview tab to monitor the share of social media for your entire traffic.
The Acquisition> Social tab also provides deep level analysis. But you will need to create UTM URLs for your own campaigns so that you can differentiate between interactions on what you share and what others share. Thankfully Google Analytics has got just the thing for you with the campaign URL builder. The UTM, for memory, provides additional information for each click so that you know the source, medium, content (this is only valid for A/B experiment to separate different versions of the same page) and name of the specific piece of content you are sharing.

c. Brand or product awareness:

Google Search Console, that we all know as Webmaster Tools, is your best ally for this. The Search Traffic> Search Analytics tab will provide indication on search terms, as well your own ranking and clicks for those. What you really want to look for is how often your brand and product names are typed in search.

d. Brand or product mentions:

The Search Console is really cool but Moz will show you more accurate and relevant results for your brand mentions. Fresh Web Explorer lets you collect and compare the mentions of your brand (or your products) online. You will need to use the operator to set up the right targeting but Moz guides you through it. What is really helpful is that you can create an alert to keep up with your brand mentions. Using the historical graph can also help to show specific evolutions in brand awareness.

2. Increase your SEO rankings: 


a. Increase your SERPs visibility:

Moz Rank Tracker enables you to track over time the ranking of specific keywords in a variety of search engines and locations. You will need to write your content smartly but this is a great tool to follow evolutions in the SERPs. You can also track your competitors for the same keywords which is always a good thing to know!


b. Identify your SERPs potential:

The Search Console will provide information of search terms you are ranking for and help to identify new keywords you may not be targeting yet. You’ll find everything you need and even more in the Search Traffic> Search Analytics tab. This is extremely valuable data when you work on your content. Additionally there’s another tool, Moz Content, that helps to identify the keywords and topics you need to target.


c. Visualize your SEO evolution:

Moz is a great tool. I keep coming back for more as it has so many different options. The safest way to highlight your SEO progress is by using a link profile graph, using this profiling tool with Open Site Explorer to compare your profile to competitors’ and target backlinks from high domain authority sites. There is nothing new here as this link profiling method has been shared on Moz in 2011 but it remains an extremely valuable tool! You will find all the necessary instructions and advices on how to use the tool and how to interpret readings can be found in the Moz article I’ve shared above. As a general rule of the thumb link profiling is extremely helpful to gain an overview of where link earning efforts should be focused.
Using the graph below as an example you can establish competitive advantages for both spider and swan: spider would need to focus its link earning to domains with a DA>80, while swan would need to target domains between 40 and 80 DA and continue to increase links from DA>80. This type of comparison is highly meaningful as it highlights the competitive advantages and challenges of your own website.
However when using Moz to evaluate your link performance, do bear in mind that the Mozscape index, responsible for crawling the Internet and monitoring links, updates every month. This can cause slight fluctuations in the number of links and consequently impacts on domain and page authority. Always make sure to time your analysis with the Mozscape schedule agenda, which you will find on the Open Site Explorer homepage, and to compare with your competitors to use the most accurate scope of data.


d. Increase in organic traffic to content pages:

Google Analytics provides data on your traffic channels. It’s legitimate to expect an increase in organic traffic driving visitors to your content as an evidence of your SEO performance.
There are various ways of identify your winning content but the easiest one is to use the Acquisition > Search Engine Optimization > Landing Pages tab.
It will highlight organic traffic coming to specific URLs.
You can use the advanced settings to list only your content pages. To do this you’ll need to use regular expressions, referred to as regex by the pros.
You can list all your URLs and separate each URL with ' | 'which serves as an ‘or’ function
/content-abc /content-def
or, assuming all content pieces are on a same type of URL structure,
such as www.example.com/blog/+content
you could just as easily match your regular expression with the word ‘blog’

Increase your conversion ability:


a. Increase in conversions:

Google Analytics can track conversions for you, assuming your settings are correct. You will naturally need to set up goals, events and eCommerce tracking, depending what is relevant for your business. Google Analytics provides plenty of information on how to do this, but I am sure you already are all set up at this point!
You can visualize the evolution in conversions by specifically marking the dates of your content publication on the graph under Conversions > Goals > Overview.
Ideally what you want to see is an increase in conversion rate with your new content.


b. Use converters segment:

Google Analytics come with prebuilt, default segments that you can already use to dive into your data. The converters segment in Analytics is looking at both goal and transaction completions so that you don’t need to add any setting to get it to work.
What you want to see is whether converters are also content consumers, which helps to demonstrate that your content delivers conversions. This is an easy trick.
You can directly apply the converters segment and use the Behavior > Site Content > All Pages tab to search for your content URLs using the regex we’ve seen earlier.
If this is too much trouble you can create your own converters-content-consumers segment. To do this, you need to copy your converters segment. Don’t forget to change the segment’s name.
Then you will need to edit the Advanced Conditions by adding the following filter: ‘Users Include Page’.
Then it’s up to you whether you want to use ‘’a regex to call all relevant content URLs, ‘contains’ for specific URL structures such as /blog/, or whether you prefer the page to use the condition ‘is one of’ which enables you to list all the targeted URLs.


c. Find out the best performing content:

Using the default converter segment in Google Analytics you can select the Behavior > Site Content > All Pages tab to breakdown content by conversion performance. This is valuable to define the combination of content that delivers conversions to your website.


d. Find out the most valuable content:

If you use eCommerce transactions in Google Analytics, the settings used just above can help to find out the pieces of content that are related to the highest transaction values. This is particularly useful when trying to demonstrate the monetary value of your content strategy. What you are looking for is a clue of what type of content performs best so that you can use your findings for a better targeted content generation.
I have found that these three simple tricks made all the difference when preparing and implementing a content strategy. They help you to keep track of where you are and where you are going, and more importantly they help to make your content more accountable for the business performance.

Try to imagine this. When you're reading a story on the web or blog, you are given two choices. You can choose the next story based on your own choice. After selecting then you can continue reading the story. Shortly afterwards you will be presented back to the 2 other options. The next choice is up to you. Then you continue the story you are reading. After that you will be faced again with 2 choices. So onwards. The more stories you read so the more options you have taken.


If you feel curious then you can re-read the story by changing your selection. Then you will see a different story with the story that you have read previously. The question now is why is this so? Because the storyline will be varying according to your choice. 


I, as the author is planning to make tens of thousands of articles with millions of choices in it. With tens of thousands of articles then you like to see a show of your favorite series on TV for several years. The difference is while watching your favorite TV series, then you can not change the story. Meanwhile, if you read this story then you can alter the way the story according to your own choice.

You might say like this. Sounds like a book "choose your own adventure". Books I read when I was young.

Correctly. The idea is taken from there. But if you read through a book, the story is not so exciting. Due to the limited number of pages. When a child first you may already feel interesting. 1. Ads. With millions of unique visitors, the price of the ads will be expensive.
2. Affiliate marketing. In addition to advertising, we are also able to put up some banner from affiliate marketing.
3. Contribution of the readers. If you have a million readers and every reader to pay one US dollar per year then you will get the income of one million US dollars per year.

So what happens next? In 10-20 years ahead then read a story in a book to be abandoned. Otherwise my startup will grow and continue to develop into a new entertainment industry.

New entertainment industry, where I was a forerunner startup will continue to evolve. 
Therefore, in 10-20 years into the future, my startup will be earning hundreds of million USD annually.
