Jumlah sperma yang melimpah dapat meningkatkan peluang mereka untuk mencapai sel telur yang matang, dan akhirnya hanya satu yang bisa masuk dan membuahi satu sel telur.

Menariknya, beberapa peneliti berteori bahwa sperma telah beradaptasi untuk mengambil peran tertentu, selain untuk pembuahan. Misalnya, sperma yang abnormal - yang tidak dapat membuahi - memiliki fungsi lain, seperti menemukan dan menghancurkan atau memblokir sperma dari laki-laki lain yang masuk ke saluran reproduksi wanita.

Hipotesis ini bukannya tak menuai kontroversi. Peneliti lain berpendapat bahwa sperma yang abnormal akan tetap abnormal dan tidak memiliki fungsi lain. Karena itu, para peneliti sepakat bahwa penelitian lebih lanjut perlu dilakukan pada struktur dan fungsi sperma sebelum konsensus lebih besar dapat dibuat.
