The-Webby-Awards
The internet is full of fantastic websites, marketing campaigns, advertising techniques, video channels, mobile apps, and much, much more that you never get to see.  There is so much you can learn from these sites and find website inspiration for your own projects, which is why it is good to take a look around to see what other sites are doing.  What better place to look then than at the Webby Awards!

What Are The Webby Awards?

The Webby Awards are the internet equivalent of the Oscars, BAFTAs, Golden Globes, Emmys, etc. where the best of the best online content is recognised and awarded.   The Webby Awards was actually first started back in 1996, but has since grown into a truly prestigious award ceremony that is globally recognised.
2014 marks the 18th Annual Webby Awards where a panel of 1000+ judges and web experts decide upon the winners.  This judging panel includes some of the biggest names online and offline, including (for this year);
  • Vint Cerf – Co-inventor of the internet,
  • Biz Stone – Co-founder of Twitter,
  • Kevin Systrom – Co-founder of Instagram,
  • David Karp – Founder of Tumblr,
  • Iain Tait – Executive Creative Director at Google Lab,
  • Arianna Huffington – President and Editor-in-Chief of Huffington Post Media Group,
  • David Bowie – Musician,
  • Kevin Spacey – Actor,
What is quite unique about the Webby Awards is that for each category, 2 awards are presented.  One (The Webby Awards) is picked by the 1000+ judging panel and the other (The Webby People’s Voice Award) is picked by the general public who vote online.
Voting for the 18th Annual Webby Awards ends on April 24 2014, so if you want to vote, make sure you do it soon!

Finding Website Inspiration

I have been taking a good look at many of the nominees online.  In fact I’ve literally spent the whole day viewing and voting for my favourites, which led me to put this post together, it’s quite addictive when you start.  There are so many great websites to checkout and draw inspiration from, many of which are sites that you probably won’t have heard of before.
I obviously can’t list them all here as there are quite a few, but I have listed some of the ones that caught my attention.

Flat Design vs Realism

Webby Awards
This great site (in the Web: Self-Promotion/Portfolio category) is essentially a showcase for a web design company.  What I personally like about it though is that it highlights the two distinct styles that are being used at the moment online and that it demonstrates the things that you can do with HTML5.

The Climate Name Change

This online video campaign (in the Online Film & Video: Viral category) looks to highlight the issue of climate change.  The whole campaign is done with humour and a bit of tongue in cheek, to help challenge people’s opinions.  The fact that this campaign has had millions of hits and over a hundred thousand petition signatures shows how powerful online campaigns can be.

Flash vs HTML5

Webby Awards
This site (in the Web: Best Practices category) pits Flash against HTML5 in a battle to see which comes out on top.  They do this in the form of a game that they have created, but also weigh up the pros and cons of each.  I thought this was really interesting and a great way to showcase both formats.

Vsauce

Vsauce (in the Online Film & Video: News & Information category) is one of my favourite YouTube channels online, so it is great to see it get nominated for a Webby Award.  This channel focuses on the unusual and weird questions that we all want answering, such as; What if everyone jumped at once? What colour is a mirror? or Why are things creepy?
It is good to see that there are quality channels like this showing that there is a demand for quality, intelligent information and that we aren’t all obsessed with celebrity gossip.

Instant News Satire

Webby Awards
This type of advertising (in the Interactive Advertising & Media: Display & Banner Advertising category) lets us glimpse into the future.  The New Zealand company behind this has come up with a way of displaying advertising that is directly related to the content that it is being shown next to.  In the example that they show, they display satirical cartoons being drawn next to news stories from that day, which greatly boosted click through rates and ad revenue.  I personally think that we will be seeing more of this type of advertising very soon.

Canva

A big part of running a website involves graphics as every site needs images, graphics, logos, etc.  Canva (in the Web: Web Services & Applications category) is a site that will let you design all of your graphics with easy in your browser.  Pick from a huge selection of stock images and graphics to create your own and then publish them to your site.  I think this site is great for anyone that hasn’t got Photoshop, which is quite a lot of people.

Summary

This is just a tiny, tiny, window into the vast collection of great websites/campaigns/apps that have been nominated for an award at this year’s 18th Annual Webby Awards.  I have tried to pick out some of the ones that I quite liked, but I would really encourage you to go and explore the nominees for yourself.  Perhaps you might just be inspired to create something worthy for next years ceremony.

My STARTUP :

A story with millions of choices in it.

Try to imagine this. When you're reading a story on the web or blog, you are given two choices. You can choose the next story based on your own choice. After selecting then you can continue reading the story. Shortly afterwards you will be presented back to the 2 other options. The next choice is up to you. Then you continue the story you are reading. After that you will be faced again with 2 choices. So onwards.

If you feel curious then you can re-read the story by changing your selection. Then you will see a different story with the story that you have read previously. The question now is why is this so? Because the storyline will be varying according to your choice.

Based on the above, then you are faced with two choices. Are you interested in reading my story is? Or you are not interested at all. The choice is in your hands.
If you are interested then spread widely disseminated this article to your family, friends, neighbors, and relatives. You can also distribute it on facebook, twitter, goggle +, or other social media that this article be viral in the world. By doing so it is a new entertainment industry has been created.

Its creator named Richard Nata.
