Benny Chain, ilmuwan University College London yang turut serta meneliti mengatakan, "Jumlah HIV dalam aliran darah selalu lebih rendah dan model kami menunjukkan bahwa HIV dalam darah saja tak akan mampu menyebabkan AIDS."

"Kemungkinan besar HIV bersembunyi di tempat yang punya populasi sel T tinggi, seperti saluran pencernaan, dan kemudian menggunakan mekanisme antar-sel untuk menyebar secara efisien," imbuhnya.

Adanya HIV yang bersembunyi dalam tempat kaya sel T itu menunjukkan perlunya penggunaan ARV segera. Sebab, bagaimana bila begitu terinfeksi HIV langsung bersembunyi di tempat tersebut?

"Model kami memberi petunjuk bahwa memblokir penyebaran antar-sel akan mencegah perkembangan HIV menjadi AIDS, menggarisbawahi perlunya cara perawatan baru," jelas Chain. Ke depan, Chan dan Zhang berencana mempelajari langsung penyebaran virus serupa HIV pada hewan.
