Toothpaste contains fluoride. It is the main ingredient that makes the teeth whiter and stronger. There are issues surrounding the use of fluoride lately. According to studies, too much fluoride could lead to fluorosis. Instead of being able to maintain a healthy smile, it leads to dental issues.
Fluoride negatively affects your teeth, bones and even your brain. For kids, the danger is doubled. They are more sensitive to fluoride. It doesn’t mean though that you have to avoid commercial toothpaste altogether.
The most important thing to do is to check the label. Make sure that your preferred brand doesn’t contain that much fluoride. It should also be mixed with other natural ingredients so you don’t just stuff chemical on your teeth.

Swallowing toothpaste could also be an issue especially for kids. Before allowing them to brush without help, you must teach them how to do it properly. Even if the toothpaste tastes good, tell them to spit it out.
Choose toothpaste brands for kids if possible. They are more suitable to kids’ teeth and they also have a smaller percentage of fluoride. Avoid toothpaste with artificial sweeteners even if kids love them. It is like not brushing your teeth at all.
Try organic toothpaste as well. You can prepare one at home using simple ingredients like peppermint, baking soda, and sea salt. They all contain whitening properties. When mixed together, they create a paste that resembles commercial toothpaste. The effects are also the same or even better. They pose no risk too as there’s no fluoride in it.
