Posting Freelance Writing Job Ads: Dos and Don’ts

Share on Google+Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on LinkedIn
Ready to hire a freelance writer?
One common method for hiring a freelance writer is to post a job ad. Sounds quick & easy, right?
But job ads often get hundreds of responses, and you could end up wasting a lot of time sifting through them if your job ad isn’t targeted correctly.
In my freelance writing career, I’ve read lots of job ads. Many of them actually invite low-quality responses by the way they’re written.
If you’re looking to hire a high-quality freelance writer who’s qualified to produce the work you need, just follow these tips to make sure you write a job ad that will attract those writers and repel the rest.

How to Hire a Freelance Writer With the Perfect Job Ad

DOs

  1. DO post on a specialized job board and/or forum. You’re more likely to reach your target audience if you post your ad on a speciality job board, such as ProBlogger,JournalismJobs, or MediaBistro.
  2. DO be as specific as possible about the job. Let writers know details like:
    • Topic, format, and length of the piece
    • Whether it’s a one-time or ongoing project
    • Volume, quantity, and duration of work (e.g. 5 posts per month ongoing contract)
    • Deadline or turn-around time
    • Price if you have a set budget
  3. DO post necessary qualifications. If you must have a writer with industry experience, or a professional blogger who knows how to use WordPress, include it in your ad.
  4. DO let applicants know what you need from them to apply. For example, you could request:
    • Resumes
    • Writing samples
    • Links to online portfolios
    • Social media links
    • Quotes or proposals
  5. DO proofread your ad. It’s true that you’re not the professional writer in this equation… but you may scare away good writers if your ad is rife with spelling and grammar mistakes. Have someone else look it over and proofread for you.
  6. DO set up systems to automatically filter responses. If you use Gmail you can use aplus sign alias and set up a filter to catch any emails sent to that address. This’ll keep your inbox from getting flooded with responses.

DON’Ts

  1. DON’T post unnecessary qualifications. You probably don’t really need a native English speaker with a master’s degree in journalism, unless it’s highly relevant to the topic. Many high quality, successful freelance writers don’t have college degrees at all, so don’t rule us out :)
  2. DON’T expect to pay pennies for top quality work. Your requirements should match your rates. If you are requiring your writer to have a masters in journalism, they’ll likely demand higher rates than writers with no degree. If you’re on a tight budget, don’t expect to get top quality work. In general, you get what you pay for.
  3. DON’T blur the line between independent contractor and employee. Even if you say you’re hiring an independent contractor, that won’t protect you from a lawsuit if you treat them as an employee by trying to set hours or control how they do their work. If you’re in the US, you can check out the IRS website for details on the difference.
(Disclaimer: I’m not a lawyer and this isn’t legal advice. I live in the United States, so this may be different in your country. If you’re not sure of the difference, you may want to consult a lawyer.)
  4. DON’T demand that your writer not plagiarize. Declaring in your job ad that plagiarism won’t be tolerated starts off the client-freelancer relationship with a complete lack of trust. Please respect that quality freelance writers are professionals who know what they’re doing. Including this in your ad sends the wrong signal (i.e., that you’re expecting unprofessional writers to apply).

My STARTUP :

A story with millions of choices in it.

Try to imagine this. When you're reading a story on the web or blog, you are given two choices. You can choose the next story based on your own choice. After selecting then you can continue reading the story. Shortly afterwards you will be presented back to the 2 other options. The next choice is up to you. Then you continue the story you are reading. After that you will be faced again with 2 choices. So onwards.

If you feel curious then you can re-read the story by changing your selection. Then you will see a different story with the story that you have read previously. The question now is why is this so? Because the storyline will be varying according to your choice.

Based on the above, then you are faced with two choices. Are you interested in reading my story is? Or you are not interested at all. The choice is in your hands.
If you are interested then spread widely disseminated this article to your family, friends, neighbors, and relatives. You can also distribute it on facebook, twitter, goggle +, or other social media that this article be viral in the world. By doing so it is a new entertainment industry has been created.

Its creator named Richard Nata.
