How To Find a Freelance Writer: 4 Methods

Share on Google+Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on LinkedIn
You’ve decided it’s time to outsource to a professional to keep your blog updated or write your business marketing materials… now how do you find a freelance writer?
While it seems like there are more freelance writers than ever today, it can still be difficult to find the right one for you and your business.
You need a writer who…
  1. is reliable and professional,
  2. has experience writing the materials you need,
  3. will contribute to the success of your business and help you reach your goals,
  4. produces writing that meet your standards for style and quality,
  5. charges rates that fit your budget, and
  6. has an opening for a new client.
And those are only basic requirements for hiring a freelance writer. Depending on your goals and needs, you may have more specific needs that make finding the right freelance writer nearly impossible.
But no matter how specialized your requirements, there are sure to be freelance writers out there who meet them and would love to work with you! Here are a few tried-and-true methods you can use to find a quality freelance writer that will meet your needs and budget.

1. Post a Job Ad For a Freelance Writer

Pros: Posting a job ad can be a quick and easy way to find a freelancer. Instead of spending time hunting for a freelancer, you can just post the job and let them come to you.
Cons: Though it seems like this method may save you time, that’s not always the case. It’s common for online job posting to get hundreds of responses, so you could end up spending hours sorting through them.

Tips for posting writing jobs

  1. Don’t just post your job on a general site like Craigslist; use a specialized job boardlike ProBloggerJournalismJobsFreelanceJobOpenings, or MediaBistro.
  2. Be as specific as possible in your posting. Include details like estimated word counts or length of the piece, and what kind of turnaround time or deadline you expect. If you have a specific fee or budget range in mind, share it in the job posting so you don’t get responses from writers who expect something completely different.
  3. Add a unique requirement to weed out responses from applicants who aren’t paying attention. For example, you could request that all responses use a certain email subject line when they apply.
  4. Automate your email to handle the responses so your inbox isn’t flooded. If you use Gmail, you could have applications sent to your Gmail address with a plus sign and added word, like you+writer@example.com (Gmail will disregard anything after the plus sign & send it to you@example.com). Then use Gmail filters to set up a filter to label any emails with the requested subject line and have them skip your inbox, and delete any other emails sent to that address.

2. Ask Your Network What Freelancers They Use

Tell your friends, family, business partners, vendors, and customers that you’re looking for a freelance writer.
Pros: The writer will come with a recommendation from someone you know, so it’s more likely you’ll get a good quality writer.
Cons: It could take some time to find someone, and when you do, that writer may not be a good fit for your needs.

3. Check Out Bylines On Articles You Enjoy

When you’re reading articles and blog posts around the web, take the time to check bylines of pieces you enjoy. See if there’s a link back to the writer’s website, or try Googling their name. (When you contact them, be sure let them know how you found them!)
Pros: You can narrow down your search to writers whose style you like.
Cons: The writer may be a staff writer and not a freelancer, or not accepting new clients, or they may be out of your budget range.

4. Search Online To Find a Freelance Writer

Pros: You can narrow down your search to writers who specialize in your industry or the type of writing you need. If you’re searching for a writer skilled in SEO, the fact that they show up in your search results will prove their skills.
Cons: Good freelance writers don’t necessarily know how to optimize their websites for search engines, so your search results may not lead you to the best freelance writers that are a fit for your needs.

Tips for searching online for a freelance writer

  1. Use Google searching tips and tricks to narrow down your search.
  2. Try searching on LinkedIn instead. Some freelancers optimize their LinkedIn profiles to attract clients.
  3. Don’t stop searching after finding one writer that seems perfect. Keeping going and send inquiries to several writers to make sure you have options to choose from.

These are tried-and-true methods that will work to help you find the freelance writer that’s right for you. I’ve worked with several several clients who found me by using these methods!

A story with millions of choices in it.

Try to imagine this. When you're reading a story on the web or blog, you are given two choices. You can choose the next story based on your own choice. After selecting then you can continue reading the story. Shortly afterwards you will be presented back to the 2 other options. The next choice is up to you. Then you continue the story you are reading. After that you will be faced again with 2 choices. So onwards.

If you feel curious then you can re-read the story by changing your selection. Then you will see a different story with the story that you have read previously. The question now is why is this so? Because the storyline will be varying according to your choice.

Based on the above, then you are faced with two choices. Are you interested in reading my story is? Or you are not interested at all. The choice is in your hands.
